T850 Digital Still CameraInterface Design

BenQ T series Camera is positioned as a trendy and fun product. The design philosophy for its interface is fun and user friendly.  The design inspiration of the circle buttons come from the shape of human fingers, which are the best tools to operate on a touch screen camera. The Quick-Set Menu acts as a short-cut which covers the most frequently used functions. Users can easily identify the most recently used functions at this section. When setting is completed, the Quick-Set Menu can be hidden at the lower right side of the screen for a quick access next time.  It brings users better experiences to use the camera and fear no more about the complexity and hassles they have to go through using other cameras.

Beside the easy access of the Quick-Set Menu, usability is also one of the main focuses in this design. Users’ hand gestures were taking into our consideration during the user testing research. Observation of user behaviors of a camera shows that having icons such as previous and next, return and exit (most frequent used functions when viewing the photos) placed at the lower left and right sides will allow users to operate on the camera with their both hands, just like how people play video games with both hands. This design make photo viewing easier and more fun !

One of the main challenges for the look and feel of T850 interface is its 16 colors hardware limitation. Beside the colors previously set for the Painter function, there were only 6 colors left for other icons. Therefore, the color of the interface is precisely picked within black and orange spectrum, and this color setting gives the entire interface a main tone within the acceptable numbers of colors.

BenQ T850 is the first touch screen camera in 2008. After the success of T850, the style has been made a standard to other camera models within the T series product line.
